Governor’s Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 13, 1998) -- A project to design and construct a biological nutrient removal (BNR) facility at the Cambridge Wastewater Treatment Plant in Dorchester County will receive additional financial assistance thanks to Board of Public Works approval today of a $500,000 grant.

"Removal of these nutrients will improve the quality of water that enters the Choptank River and ultimately will help Maryland achieve its goal of a 40 percent reduction in the Chesapeake Bay by the year 2000," said Governor Parris N. Glendening.

In addition to this grant, Maryland previously has provided $340,000 in financial assistance. Construction is expected to begin in April 1999 and be complete in April 2001.

"We are very appreciative to the Board of Public Works appropriating a $500,000 grant for the biological nutrient removal project at the City's Wastewater Treatment Plant," said Cambridge Mayor David J. Wooten. "We recognize the importance of this costly project and would like to acknowledge the State's cooperative assistance in working with the City of Cambridge to achieve its goal to reduce the nutrient pollution in the Choptank River and Chesapeake Bay."

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve construction and consulting contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
