Governor’s Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 23, 1998) -- A $16,673 grant to acquire three flood-prone properties near Wills Creek in Locust Grove, Allegany County, received State Board of Public Works approval today as part of the Comprehensive Flood Management Grant Program. These properties were damaged by floods resulting from the winter storm of 1996.

"We are committed to eliminating these flood-ravaged structures," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "They pose a risk to the health and safety of their occupants as well as others downstream."

Allegany County will demolish the structures and convert the properties to open space. In addition to the State grant, the Federal Emergency Management Agency will contribute $100,039. Allegany County will match the State's contribution.

"The Allegany County Commissioners continue to support the acquisition program in the Wills Creek and Georges Creek Basins and are very supportive of the funding provided by the State of Maryland to these acquisition projects," said Lloyd W. Lewis, Acting County Administrator.

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Robert L. Swann and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
