Governor’s Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (November 10, 1998) -- A project that will stabilize the streambank of Little Falls Branch of the Potomac River in Montgomery County, received Board of Public Works approval today of a $155,000 grant.

"Stabilizing the streambank will reduce the amount of sediment pollution that enters Little Falls Branch," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "The project is an excellant example of the many efforts underway in Maryland to improve water quality in the Potomac River and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay."

In addition to the State grant, the project will receive matching funds from the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection. Construction is expected to begin in June 1999 and be completed in September 1999.

"This grant will help significantly in our efforts to address pollution problems and stream degradation in Little Falls," said Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan. "The stream bank stabilization and habitat restoration measures funded under this project will further improve conditions for aquatic life, and we hope to soon see the return of more healthy stream life to this heavily used recreational area and much-loved park."

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Robert L. Swann and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
