ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 19, 1999) – A $33,625 grant to acquire eight flood-prone properties in the Town of Gilmore, Allegany County, received Board of Public Works approval today under the State Comprehensive Flood Management Grant Program. The properties were damaged in September 1996 from the remnants of Hurricane Fran.

"We are committed to eliminating flood-ravaged structures such as those in Gilmore," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "They pose a risk to the town and the health and safety of others downstream."

Allegany County will convert the properties into open space. In addition to the State grant, the Federal Emergency Management Agency will ontribute $201,750. The county will match the State’s contribution.

"The county commissioners appreciate the assistance the State of Maryland has provided to Allegany County for its acquisition program," said Allegany County Commission President Dale R. Lewis. "The $33,625 grant in matching funds provided for the Miners Avenue Project will enable the acquisition of eight floodprone properties to proceed."

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is composed of Comptroller William Donald Schaefer and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the general Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transaction and other procurement actions.
