ANNAPOLIS, MD (October 13, 1999) – A proposed new water storage system for the city of Crisfield in Somerset County received a $340,000 grant increase from the Maryland Board of Public Works today.

"Water is one of our most precious resources, and we have an obligation to ensure that every community has a healthy water supply," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "This water storage system is a long-term investment that will ensure that current and future Crisfield Heights residents have access to an adequate supply of safe and clean water."

The project includes the construction of a 500,000-gallon water tower, rehabilitation of the Maryland Avenue well and connection of the well to the tower. The Board approved a previous grant of $500,000 for this project and Somerset County also acquired a $518,431 Rural Development loan for this project.

"This project is vital to our municipality and could not happen without the grant funding," said Crisfield Mayor Richard Scott. "The taxpayers and ratepayers of the City of Crisfield could not possibly bear the burden of financing a project of this magnitude."

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller William Donald Schaefer and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
