Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (February 9, 2000) – The Maryland Board of Public Works approved a $500,000 grant to Washington County for a sewer line that will enable both the county and the City of Hagerstown to jointly accept wastewater from customers in the I-70 corridor.

"The project reflects the type of a sound, regional approach that makes the best use of our existing wastewater treatment capacity," said Lt. Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, who chaired today’s meeting. "It also is consistent with our Smart Growth policies because it will help to direct development to the City of Hagerstown and other existing communities in Washington County."

The project includes the construction of the sewer line and modifications to pump stations to serve 432 residential and 288 commercial customers along Sharpsburg Pike. When completed, the new sewer line will give the area the flexibility to send wastewater to the plant best suited to accept it at the time. Construction is expected to begin in early spring and should be completed in the fall.

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller William Donald Schaefer and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
