Press Release

BALTIMORE, MD (September 9, 2010) – A Western Maryland woman who heads a regional consortium of business and civic leaders is Maryland’s newest representative on the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin.

Colleen T. Peterson has been named one of Maryland’s three commissioners on the ICPRB.

Peterson, 59, of Frostburg, is executive director of the Greater Cumberland Committee and a former vice president at Frostburg State University. As part of her duties at the Greater Cumberland Committee she is working with public officials and citizens from Allegany and Garrett counties and Mineral County, West Va., on a study of water resources in the region. In that capacity, she is working with the State of Maryland on its study of water resources in Central and Western Maryland.

The ICPRB is an interstate compact commission established by Congress in 1940. Its mission is the enhancement, protection, and conservation of the water resources of the Potomac River and its tributaries through regional and interstate cooperation. Represented by appointed commissioners, the ICPRB includes the District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the federal government. The ICPRB works with the basin states to promote watershed-based resources management, and helps develop water resources management plans, total daily maximum load plans, fisheries restoration, public outreach/stewardship programs, and conducts research that supports state and Chesapeake Bay water quality initiatives.

Peterson’s appointment became effective in June.
