Press Release

(Baltimore, Maryland) September 10, 2008 - The Maryland Board of Public Works today approved a $270,000 grant from the Small Creek and Estuary Program to restore a section of Lower Spring Branch in Timonium. The Board is comprised of Governor Martin O’Malley, Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp, and Comptroller Peter Franchot.

"Improving the water quality in our local streams, creeks and rivers will help restore the health of our environment and the Chesapeake Bay," said Governor O'Malley. "These projects are part of a state-wide effort to protect Maryland's drinking water and help keep our waterways healthy, safe and fun for generations to come."

Lower Spring Branch Stream Restoration Project – Baltimore County

The Board approved a $270,000 grant to restore approximately 2,925 linear feet of an eroded stream between Pot Spring Road and Dulaney Valley Road in the Loch Raven Watershed. The project will remove approximately 567 linear feet of concrete channel, install end of pipe pool structures, adjust channel geometry, stabilize stream banks, install grade control structures and plant a riparian buffer. The goal is to restore the eroded stream, establish and enhance riparian buffers, improve and restore aquatic habitat, and reduce erosion. Completion of this project will finish the restoration efforts in this area by linking the previously restored upper reach of Spring Branch to the Loch Raven Reservoir and will reduce nutrients and sediments to Spring Branch and the Loch Raven Reservoir, a raw water source for the Baltimore City Drinking Water System.
