Maryland's Chesapeake Bay Phase I Watershed Implementation Plan is being developed to restore and protect a healthy Bay for future generations. The six Chesapeake Bay watershed states and the District of Columbia will submit draft Phase One Plan reports by September 1, 2010, in support of the development of the draft and final Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load (Bay TMDL). A TMDL sets a pollution “diet” for a waterway.
Four regional meetings about the development of the Plan have been scheduled for June 2010. The Phase I Watershed Implementation Plan is to be completed later this year. A Phase II Plan, due to be completed by November 2011, will be a refinement of Phase I and include more detailed, local information. Ideas and opinions will help ensure that the Bay Plan will reflect a shared responsibility that is balanced and fair.
The format of the two-hour meetings is designed to provide time for those who attend to voice their thoughts. With that in mind, only limited time will be devoted to background information. Material on the subject is available for review on EPA's Bay TMDL website.
A meeting for Western Maryland was held June 15 in Hagerstown, a meeting for North-Central Maryland was held June 17 in Baltimore, and a meeting for the Eastern Shore was held June 23 in Denton.
The meetings, which staff from the Maryland departments of Environment, Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Planning, have also been scheduled for:
