MDE mourns the death of Dr. M. Gordon “Reds” Wolman who passed away on February 24, 2010. Dr. Wolman headed the Advisory Committee on the Management and Protection of the State’s Water Resources that was staffed by MDE. Its final report: Water for Maryland’s Future: What We Must Do Today concluded that Maryland is without an accurate picture of the long-term viability of the State’s water resources, that demands and stresses on our water resources will increase, and that the State needs more comprehensive data to plan for the future. Reds was a strong and respected leader of the Committee from 2003 through the completion of its work in 2008. He was a tireless advocate for the actions recommended by Committee and testified multiple times before the legislature along with the Department in support of our efforts to improve the management of the State’s water resources.

Wolman was Professor Emeritus at Johns Hopkins University, having joined the faculty in 1958. He was not only a world renowned academic scholar, but also a teacher, advisor, and mentor to hundreds of environmental professionals working today at all levels of government, academia, and business throughout the world. He was well known, loved and respected by all of his peers, students, and everyone in the Department who worked with him over the years.
Upon learning of Dr. Wolman’s death, Governor O'Malley issued the following statement:

"The State of Maryland has lost a great citizen, friend, and conservationist with the passing of distinguished scholar Reds Wolman.

"With unparalleled personal and professional commitment to our natural resources and our environment, Reds pioneered actions on geologic and water quality issues including sediment, shore erosion control, oyster restoration and groundwater. He was also a tireless advocate for the State programs and employees who manage these vital resources.

"His work and his spirit will continue to guide us as we work to create a sustainable future for Maryland."
