Back to this issue's cover page

Join MDE Secretary Shari T. Wilson, Scot Spencer, chairman of the Maryland Commission on Environmental Justice and Sustainable Communities, and other officials and community and business leaders for a detailed look at the connections between land use, public health, and the environment.

“Environment, Justice, and Health in the Planning Process: Strategies for Maryland,” is a one-day symposium that will kick off a comprehensive state effort to better coordinate planning, development, public health assessments and goals for sustainability. The event, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. October 3 at Morgan State University, is free. But space is limited, and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Click here to register online.

The symposium will include an evaluation of the ways in which zoning and land use processes address concerns about environmental justice and an examination of the public health effects of planning and development. Participants will identify tools and legal changes that would help incorporate these issues into the planning and permitting process.

Planners, developers, community groups, environmental scientists and activists, and public health professionals should attend.

The symposium is sponsored by the Maryland Commission on Environmental Justice and Sustainable Communities, the Baltimore Region Environmental Justice in Transportation Project, and the Maryland Departments of the Environment, Health and Mental Hygiene, Planning, and Housing and Community Development.
