The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) participated in the Maryland State Fair in Timonium for the 11th year with our prominent 8x10 foot display in the exhibition hall at the fairgrounds. Our Emergency Response Division demonstrated one of their vehicles both weekends in the midway next to the Maryland State Police exhibit.

Thousands of people visited both exhibits throughout the 11-day event. MDE provided information on the environment such as recycling, e-cycling, lead paint removal, the dangers of mercury, air pollution, water pollution, and the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund. Dozens of MDE employees helped out by staffing the booth and interacting with children (of all ages) with a bean-bag toss to win prizes. MDE gave away flying discs, pencils made from recycled denim, and various brochures including our accomplishments report.

"This is a great venue for outreach exposure and educates our youth about what MDE does for our environment,” said MDE Secretary Kendl P. Philbrick.

MDE joined over a dozen other state agencies, not to mention hundreds of vendors purveying food, carnival games, livestock activities, home and garden displays, radio remote broadcasts and 4-H demonstrations.

The Maryland State Fair has grown from 37 to over 100 acres. In 1999, the Fair added another day, requiring 11 days to fit in all the entertainment and attractions.

The more then half million visitors each year attest to what has become a favorite summer tradition the Maryland State Fair.
