College, Groups Host Car Care Clinic

Clogged air filters, dirty oil and under inflated tires can cause your vehicle to run less efficiently and use more gas. So AAA, in cooperation with the Community Colleges of Baltimore County, the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Baltimore Metropolitan Council offered a free Clean Car Clinic June 4 at the college's Catonsville campus. AAA-certified technicians were on hand to perform a 38-point quality checks on vehicles to diagnose potential problems.

As part of the effort, Del. James E. Malone Jr. donated a Global Electric Vehicle (GEM) to the college. GEMs are five horsepower, two-and-four passenger electric vehicles with a top speed of about 25 miles per hour. They meet both National Highway Safety Administration and state traffic safety standards for use on private property and public roads with speed limits up to 35 miles per hour. GEM cars can be operated for approximately two cents per mile, less than a tenth of the operating cost of a typical work truck in the campus fleet. Electric cars are very beneficial in that they release no emissions, consume no natural resources and are more environmentally conscious. The vehicles are equipped with three-point seat belts, safety-glass windshield, wipers, headlights, turn signals, and mirrors.
