National Pollution Prevention Week is September 19-25, 2005. Consider sponsoring an activity to promote pollution prevention (P2) and highlight existing environmental practices at your facility. Suggested activities include distributing materials on your organization’s environmental best management practices, organizing a tour of your facility for community groups, or hosting an employee P2 brown bag lunch seminar or training session. National Pollution Prevention Week is also an opportunity to explore additional actions that reduce waste and conserve energy, water, and natural resources.

Free Pollution Prevention Opportunity Assessments Free, non-regulatory P2 site assessments are available through the Maryland Department of the Environment’s Pollution Prevention Program. These visits provide a fresh set of eyes to identify cost-saving opportunities at an individual workplace. Sponsoring a contest asking employees for their input on potential waste reduction practices is another way to promote P2. Finally, business experts can advise other organizations in Maryland through Businesses for the Bay’s Mentor program. Businesses for the Bay mentors are volunteers who assist with pollution prevention methods and serve as a peer-to-peer resource. Planning a P2 Week activity? Share your success stories, by contacting MDE’s Pollution Prevention Program at 410-537-4119.
