BALTIMORE, MD (June 9, 2006) – For the tenth year, regional businesses and their leaders will be recognized for environmental efforts and achievements. The Maryland Department of the Environment and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Chesapeake Bay Program seek businesses that voluntarily implement pollution prevention projects to receive the 2006 Businesses for the Bay Excellence Award.

Awards are granted to small, medium, and large businesses and government organizations that that have waste reduction, energy, water, or natural resource conservation success story to share. Businesses for the Bay is currently accepting applications until July 15, 2006 for the following awards:

  • Outstanding Achievement for Pollution Prevention (separate awards for Small, Medium, and Large-Sized Businesses)

  • Outstanding Achievement for a Government Facility (separate awards for Local, State and Federal government)

  • Outstanding Achievement for Nutrient Reduction

  • Partner of the Year

  • Mentor of the Year

To apply, the organization must be a member of Businesses for the Bay, which they can join online at www.chesapeakebay.net/b4bay.htm There's no cost to join.

Past award winners from Maryland include Atotech USA, DAP Inc., Collins & Aikman, Eaton Aeroquip, Lockheed Martin Corp., Procter & Gamble Cosmetics, National Institutes of Health, Scuderi Auto Body, PerkinElmer, Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse, Unilever, and the USDA, Beltsville Area.

Businesses for the Bay is a voluntary program that encourages and recognizes pollution prevention practices located within the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Since the program's inception in 1996, more than 700 organizations program participants throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed have reported the reduction and recycling of 7.9 billion pounds of waste and materials at a cost savings of $513 million.
