Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (April 11, 2002) – Governor Parris N. Glendening yesterday announced Board of Public Works approval of a $352,150 grant for Prince George’s County to continue with work on its Wetland Creation and Stream Restoration Project.

“We are taking aggressive steps across the State to protect and preserve Maryland’s natural resources and ecologically sensitive areas,” said Governor Glendening. “This project is critical to preventing further degradation of the Oxon Run stream. In addition, this will improve water quality in the area and strengthen aquatic habitats in the stream.”

The project, located in the Birchwood City area, includes the design and construction of an off-line wetland area of an estimated 3.5 acres and extended detention to treat storm water runoff into Oxon Run, which eventually flows into the Potomac River.

The grant from the Maryland Department of the Environment’s (MDE) Water Quality Quality Infrastructure Program will help them to improve water quality, create a stable aquatic habitat and enhance wildlife habitat all at the same time.

The total cost of the project is $705,000 of which $352,850 is the local share, paid through an State Revolving Fund loan. Construction on the wetland creation and stream restoration is expected to begin in June and is slated for completion by March 2003.
