Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 5, 2003) – Governor Robert L. Ehrlich announced Board of Public Works approval yesterday of a $230,000 grant for Harford County to assist in the construction of a new sewer collection system in Oaklyn Manor and along Mandeville Road to address failing individual septic handling facilities.

The funding would be used to plan, design and construct a new sewer collection system to serve 51 homes that have failing septic systems and are having an impact on the Little Gunpowder Falls.

“Upgrading infrastructure to bring an end to this type of surface and groundwater pollution is an important and necessary effort for government to be undertaking,” Governor Ehrlich said.

The total cost of the project is $1.9 million, $254,500 of which is the county’s share. The remaining funding will come from a combination of state loans, Community Development Block and other federal grants.

“The need for public sewer to the Oaklyn Manor and Mandeville Road communities was identified in the 1980s and has since been under consideration,” said Harford County Director of Public Works Jerald Wheeler, P.E. “Harford County Government and the communities strongly support this necessary project. The time has come to make this project a reality. We appreciate the interest and funding for this extremely important undertaking.”

Work on the project is expected to begin in July 2005 and be completed by March 2006.
