Press Release

BALTIMORE, MD (April 4, 2003) – Government employees who live and work in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. metropolitan areas are encouraged to participate in two upcoming events aimed at recycling their privately-owned computers and other consumer electronics.

The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are offering two special electronics recycling, or "eCyling" events next week solely for state, federal and local government workers.

eCycling is the nation's first-of-a-kind collaboration among the states in the Mid-Atlantic Region, EPA, and the electronics industry to collect, reuse and recycle old computer equipment, televisions, and other electronics. Since October 2001, Maryland has collected more than 870 tons of electronics from residents and small businesses and prevented these products from going into landfills and incinerators. eCycling keeps toxic materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and chromium from possibly harming the environment and saves valuable landfill space.

In an effort to continue to raise awareness about the need to recycle and reuse unwanted electronics, the following two events are being held next week:

  • April 10 & 11
    From 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. at the Maryland Department of the Environment’s headquarters in the Montgomery Park Business Center, located at 1800 Washington Boulevard in Baltimore City (Loading Dock Area);

  • April 12
    From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at White Flint Mall, located at 11301 Rockville Pike in Bethesda in Lot #3, across from Bloomingdale's.

Government employees with proper ID can drop-off their personal, used electronic equipment including computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, modems, laptops, TVs and cables at these locations where they will be sorted for recycling.

For more detailed information call MDE at (800) 633-6101, ext. 3314. To learn more about eCycling visit MDE's website at: mde.maryland.gov/recycling.
