Governor’s Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (December 17, 1997) -- A project to improve drinking water for 21 homes in the Savage River Road area near the Town of Westernport, Allegany County, will soon receive a financial boost thanks to Board of Public Works approval of a $50,000 grant to install drinking water filters.

Chaired by Governor Parris N. Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.

"This project is important to the community because it will improve the quality of the drinking water," said Governor Glendening. "It will eliminate the need for future boil water alerts to the Savage River Road residents. It also will contribute to the overall quality of life for local residents."

In addition to the State grant, the town is providing $7,143 for a total project cost of $57,143. Construction will begin in January 1998 and will be completed in March 1998.

"On behalf of the Town Council of Westernport, Maryland, I would like to say that we are very happy to be getting a grant that will give the town the funds to finance the Savage River Road Project," said Mayor Robert Lyons. "This grant will enable us to put the filters in the individual homes and help the people on Savage River Road to get better water."
