Governor’s Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (November 10, 1998) -- A project to design and construct a stormwater management pond that will control runoff from 16 acres of residential land in the Town of Laytonsville, Montgomery County, received Board of Public Works approval today of a $75,000 grant.

"This stormwater management project will reduce oil and grease as well as nutrient and sediment pollution from entering local streams and the Hawkins River," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "The resulting improvement in water quality will benefit wildlife habitat in Montgomery County and provide opportunities for recreational and educational activities."

In addition to the State grant, the town is contributing $25,000. Construction is planned to begin in December 1998 and is expected to be completed in April 1999.

"By providing retrofit stormwater controls within a neighborhood that was built prior to stormwater management regulations, this project will help the water quality of Maryland's streams and rivers, particularly within the Patuxent River watershed where the project is located," said Laytonsville Councilman David Preusch.

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Robert L. Swann and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
