Patuxent Area Flood Study Receives State Assistance

ANNAPOLIS, MD (January 14, 1999) – An expanded engineering study to determine the boundary of the 100-year floodplain for the City of Laurel will receive additional State assistance thanks to Board of Public Works approval yesterday of a $229,852 grant increase.

"This engineering study is critical for the development of a flood management plan for the Patuxent River area," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "Future construction projects designed to minimize the threat from floods will be guided by the floodplain boundary."

The original State grant for this study was $211,273. The total cost of the study including the grant increase is $441,125. The study will begin this month and will be completed in December 1999.

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Robert L. Swann and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contract, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
