Governor’s Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (February 24, 1999) – A project to construct a wetland that will remove pollutants from stormwater runoff from parts of the Town of Princess Anne today received Board of Public Works approval of a $39,867 grant.

"The creation of this wetland will promote the growth of submerged aquatic vegetation, remove pollutants from stormwater runoff from the Town of Princess Anne, and improve the water quality of the Manokin River and the Chesapeake Bay," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "This project is consistent with our Smart Growth initiative because we are using State resources to control pollution in an existing community."

In addition to the State grant, the Town of Princess Anne is contributing $21,785. Construction is expected to begin in March 1999 and be completed in September 1999.

"The Town of Princess Anne is taking a big step towards water quality in the Manokin River with this beneficial project because it promotes natural resources and a healthy ecosystem," said Garland R. Hayward, President of the Princess Anne Town Council. "This project can only be successful with the State of Maryland partnering with other agencies in the funding a comprehensive plan for stormwater management."

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller William Donald Schaefer and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
