Press Release

FROSTBURG, MD (August 4, 1999) -- The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) will hold a symposium at Frostburg State University to showcase the renaissance of the headwaters of the Potomac River beginning Monday, October 25 through Wednesday, October 27. This symposium will bring together a broad base coalition of river stakeholders for a useful dialogue to work for a better Potomac River. Cooperation by state, federal and local governments has resulted in significant improvements in the North Branch, a tributary of the Potomac River, which is polluted by acid mine drainage.

The first day of the seminar, which will be held in the Performing Arts Center of Frostburg State University, will showcase past, present and future efforts in the remediation. A field trip of significant sites in Allegany and Garrett counties relating to the North Branch remediation will highlight the second day. The third day will be held at the Lane Center of Frostburg State University and focuses on the technical aspects of remediation techniques and the recommitment to the cooperative efforts of improving the North Branch.

The cost per person for both the October 25 session and the field trip on October 26 is $65. The October 25 session is $25 and the October 26 field trip is $40. The field trip is limited to 125 persons. Attendance at the October 27 session will be by invitation. For more information, contact Mary Lynn Pegg of MDE at (301) 687-4721.
