Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 3, 1999) – The Maryland Board of Public Works yesterday approved two grant extensions for stream restoration projects on Baltimore waterways -- Herring Run and Redhouse Run.

"The streams at Redhouse Run and Herring Run will greatly enhance the quality of life for Baltimore County residents by providing green areas and natural havens for wildlife in an urban setting," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "By continuing to protect and enhance these streams, we will ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy these precious natural resources."

The Herring Run project will receive a $50,000 grant increase for the restoration of the degraded headwaters, which will create a stable stream channel. The previous grant was for $200,000 and received a matching grant from Baltimore County.

The Redhouse Run stream restoration project will receive an increase of $49,400 to the prior $250,600 grant to re-grade and stabilize stream banks, re-channeling sections of the stream, replanting streamside vegetation and forests, and creating in-stream fish habitats. This project also received a matching grant from Baltimore County of $300,000.

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller William Donald Schaefer and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
