Maryland Green Registry Announces Call for Nominations for Leadership Awards

(Annapolis, Maryland) April 22, 2010 – The Maryland Green Registry, a voluntary program launched by Governor Martin O’Malley as part of the State’s Smart, Green and Growing initiative to promote and recognize sustainable “greening” efforts by organizations throughout the state, is now accepting applications for the program’s first Leadership Awards.

Maryland Green Registry members are encouraged to submit a statement describing how the environmental practices they have in place distinguish them as leaders in their field in terms of commitment to continuous improvement of environmental performance and results achieved to date. Statements, which should be submitted to GREEN.REGISTRY@maryland.gov, are due May 7, 2010. The award is to be presented annually.

“Over 180 organizations are members of the Maryland Green Registry, with more joining every day. These organizations, ranging from large manufacturers to small businesses, from educational institutions to government facilities, have all generously shared information about their environmental best practices through their online profiles,” said Maryland Governor O’Malley. “The annual Leadership Awards highlight innovative environmental practices and inspire others to take similar steps to protect our air and water, while saving money and creating a healthier workplace.”

The 2010 Maryland Green Registry Leaders will be notified in May and will receive an award certificate as well as year-long recognition on the Maryland Green Registry website with photos and logos of the winning organizations.

All Leadership Award applicants must be members of the Maryland Green Registry. To join the free program, Maryland organizations should visit www.green.maryland.gov/ and complete a best practices profile. The website includes tips and resources in the areas of environmental management and leadership; waste reduction; energy and water conservation; transportation; and green building design. This information offers numerous examples of activities to be included in the organization’s profile, as well as ideas for future efforts.

The Maryland Green Registry was launched in June 2009. It is a part of Smart, Green & Growing, an initiative introduced by Governor O’Malley in October 2008 to foster a smarter, greener, more sustainable future for Maryland families. The Initiative brings together state agencies, local governments, businesses and citizens to revitalize communities, improve transit, create green jobs, address climate change, conserve energy, preserve land, and restore the Chesapeake Bay.
