Press Release

BALTIMORE, MD (December 16, 2009) - The Maryland Board of Public Works approved a $600,000 grant to reduce pollution and improve water quality by upgrading wastewater collection. The Board is comprised of Governor Martin O’Malley, Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp, and Comptroller Peter Franchot.

"A key part of Maryland's critical work to restore the health of the Chesapeake Bay is upgrading our sewage treatment plants. Not only are we significantly reducing nitrogen pollution, these much-needed investments in our infrastructure are also putting people to work," said Governor Martin O'Malley.

The following project was approved:

  • Federalsburg Maple Avenue Combined Sewer Separation and Stormwater Management – Caroline County

A $600,000 Bay Restoration Fund Sewer Rehabilitation Grant, in addition to a previous $582,600 American Recovery and Reinvestment grant and a previous $300,000 Supplemental Assistance Grant, will fund the design and construction of new, separate sewer lines and storm drains to replace the existing, combined sewer lines. Once complete, the separate lines will reduce sewer overflows, which carry nutrient pollution into Marshy Hope Creek and ultimately to the Chesapeake Bay.
