BALTIMORE, MD (June 21, 2007) – The Maryland Department of the Environment’s (MDE) Air and Radiation Management Administration issued the following two enforcement actions today.
Royal Cleaners, Prince George’s County: MDE issued a Corrective Order and Civil Penalty in the amount of $700 to Royal Cleaners in District Heights, Md. This enforcement action is based on a Notice of Violation issued by MDE to the company for failing to obtain an air permit for a new dry cleaning machine, and for failing to monitor and keep records of dry cleaning operations as required by state and federal regulations. The Order requires the dry cleaner to comply within 30 days.
Outdoor Wood Boiler, Allegany County: MDE issued a Corrective Order to the owner of an outdoor wood boiler in Cumberland, requiring the owner to cease operation. The Order was issued after responding to several citizen complaints about heavy smoke and odors from the unit. Outdoor wood boilers can produce large amounts of dense smoke and nuisance odors. They are prohibited by air quality regulations from being constructed or operated in Maryland.
