What is Pollution Prevention?
Pollution Prevention, or P2, is a proactive approach to environmental management that aims to reduce or eliminate pollution at its source prior to recycling, pollution control technology, or disposal. P2 measures include equipment and process changes, substituting with less toxic materials, and energy and water conservation.
P2 offers benefits over traditional environmental control technologies because it prevents the transfer of pollutants from one waste stream to another and can lower operating and waste disposal costs, regulatory burdens, liability, and worker exposure. For these reasons, MDE considers P2 to be the preferred approach to environmental management.
